CANTON TWP- The Marathon Petroleum refinery had to burn off oil from a processing unit Friday morning, sending a stream of black smoke into the air. The incident occurred at about 10 a.m. and lasted for several minutes. A large flame shot from one of the refinery’s towers, with the black smoke trailing off. Spokesman Shane Pochard, in Marathon’s Findlay office, said there “was an upset” in one of the processing units, forcing the company to burn the oil being processed. The refinery’s safety systems “worked as they were designed,” he said.

The company was measuring to determine how much oil burned. If the emission exceeded allowed levels, a report would be filed with state and federal agencies.
